Portland Strip Clubs: Busting the myth of Portland as strip club capital

by exoticinportland

Busting the myth of Portland as strip club capital

Bottom line: A local paper began with the assumption that only Las Vegas and San Francisco could possibly beat Portland in the metric of strip clubs per person. The paper counted clubs, divided by population, and—voilà!—a legend was born. The methodology is pretty shaky, so you should take a generous grain of salt next time you’re told Portland has the most strips per person of any city. If this were PolitiFact, the claim would be rated “Barely True.”

Discuss this article Pdxlager January 18, 2012 You didn’t “bust” a thing here! What is the answer then? You have no idea. Worst attempt EVAH. Bob Clark January 18, 2012 Interesting. I wouldn’t be shocked if the Southeast U.S. doesn’t have a few cities with higher per capita strip clubs than stumptown. Driving the roads down “South” you often see the big billboards marketing some abode where pretty women reveal. Portland police board’s report contains summaries of alleged officer misconduct cases
Jan 10, 2012 (The Oregonian – McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) –
The Portland Police Review Board early this month released its second public report, containing summaries of cases reviewed last year involving alleged misconduct by officers — from two off-duty officers who got a free “private show” from a dancer in a strip club to a police captain accused of being “dismissive of women.”
All the names of officers are redacted, and the summaries only include the board’s recommended discipline, not the final discipline determined by the chief of police and police commissioner.
Portland police, for example, have declined to release the disciplinary action taken against Sgt. Kyle Nice, an officer involved in an alleged road-rage case in which he pulled his gun from his holster during an encounter with another motorist on April 3, 2010 in Washington County.

Yet, according to the board’s report released Jan. 6, the board unanimously found Nice acted “unprofessionally by removing, displaying or pointing his firearm at the complainant,” and that his off-duty behavior and profane language was inappropriate.  Board members said that Ni …

Portland Strip Clubs: Naked Girls Reading Comes to Portland

The bluntly titled reading series Naked Girls Reading seems an obvious pairing for Portland, pride ourselves as we do on our strip clubs and bookstores—and we’re finally getting a chapter of the nationwide series, thanks to local burlesque producers Rayleen Courtney and Sophie Maltease.
Naked Girls Reading is just what it sounds like: Naked ladies read aloud literary selections of their choosing (in any genre; this isn’t a porn reading). The lineup for Portland’s inaugural event features local burlesque performers including Courtney and Maltese, as well as Baby Le’Strange, Kit Katastrophic, and Delilah Sinn. No word yet on what they’ll be be reading. Paul Constant reviewed Naked Girls Reading’s Seattle arm for The Stranger; the piece actually sold me on the series more than the premise alone did:

Portland Strip Clubs: EXCLUSIVE: Fred Armisen Talks Portlandia Season 2

by exoticinportland

Fred Armisen: That is an aesthetic that I like. I do know what you mean. It’s interesting that you pointed it out that way, but its something that I have always liked. Its one of the reasons I have always liked England. I know that’s like name-dropping a country, “Hey, I travel!” But I like the way England is always overcast. And it does look like a horror movie sometimes. That is something I definitely like about Portland. And I mean that as a complement.
The city does have that overtly weird, dark feel. I know you’re not from Portland, but did you ever delve into some of the popular haunts from the 70s and 80s that aren’t around any more? Like Hippo Hardware, and The Organ Grinder, Acropolis, and The Sandy Jug? These dank, unsettling outposts…Mary’s Club. The haunted house of strip clubs. That actually gets a shout out here in Season 2…

Portland Strip Clubs: Portland’s New Year’s resolutions

by exoticinportland

Randy Leonard once tried to scare the SE Division neighborhood where the former Nature’s building still stands vacant by pointing out that an adult business could move into the space. Given that Portland is famous throughout the country for its clean, safe, couple-, female-, and even queer-friendly adult establishments—and the fact the city is a Mecca for those of us who identify as being out of the mainstream—this was both an upsetting and worrisome attack on that well-deserved reputation. I’d like to see that negativity gone. Adult businesses aren’t just good for our employment and economic health, they’re also good for our relationship, mental, and physical health.
I’ve been largely freaked out by riding a bike ever since taking a nasty tumble along a busy street in east county during my teens, but I am beyond proud (yes, to the point of boasting about it alongside our booze-with-full-nudity-strip clubs and nation’s strongest First Amendment) of our bike-friendliness. Alas, the ironic flip side to the popularity of this eco-enhancing …

Portland Strip Clubs: Stumptown Girl

by exoticinportland

… Portlandia” presents a heightened version of the city’s twee urbanity: a company sells artisanal light bulbs, a hotel offers a manual typewriter to every guest, and a big local event is the Allergy Pride Parade. The mayor, played by Kyle MacLachlan, becomes an object of scandal when he’s “outed” as the bass guitarist in a middle-of-the-road reggae band. (The real Portland’s mayor, Sam Adams, who is openly gay, plays MacLachlan’s assistant on the show.) Armisen and Brownstein, wearing anthropologically precise wigs and outfits, portray most of the main characters: bicycle-rights activists, dumpster divers, campaigners against any theoretical attempt to bring the Olympics to Portland, animal lovers so out of touch that they free a pet dog tied up outside a restaurant. (“Who puts their dog on a pole like a stripper?”) Many characters recur, and, because they often seem to know one another, their intersections from sketch to sketch give the show the feel of a grownup “Sesame Street.” This childlike vibe has an edge to it, however; as an Armisen character explains at one point, Portland is “where young people go to retire.”

Portland Strip Clubs: Lucas Ebert, who pretended to be OHSU doctor and businessman, gets 3 years in …

by exoticinportland

He also fooled people into thinking that he owned a Porche Boxster and other fancy sport cars (he rented them with credit information he’d scammed); that he owned a ritzy house in Forest Heights (he parked one of those fancy sports cars out front and proclaimed that he’d bought the house); and that he was a multi-millionaire and Renaissance man who juggled various jobs.
He said was on sabbatical from Microsoft’s research and development department and that he also was a porn producer and credit counselor. That last identity helped him garner the credit information of victims, then fritter away their money on expenses such as posh hotels, but also on Match.com and Domino’s Pizza, authorities say.
He piqued the attention of strippers at Portland area strip clubs, not only because he showered them with generous tips, but because he told them he’d performed 400 breast-enhancement surgeries and that he could do “mommy makeover” packages, too.

Portland Strip Clubs: Indoor bike park in Northeast Portland will be geared to BMX, mountain bikes …

by exoticinportland

A long-neglected section of Northeast 82nd Avenue is about to get a little love.
An indoor bicycle park modeled after two successful parks in the Midwest is under construction in the old bowling alley across the street from Madison High School. Slated to open in February, the Lumberyard will include 40,000 square feet of rideable space, geared toward BMX and mountain-bike riders of all ages and abilities.
The building will also house a cafe, bar and community meeting space.
Paul Mooring, president of the nearby Roseway Neighborhood Association, is optimistic about the new development. “I think it’s a great idea. That part of 82nd between the high school and Fremont is kind of a blight. We’re excited about the fact that it’s not another liquor store or strip club,” he said.
