Proposed Portland Strip Club Met With Opposition

PORTLAND, Ore. — Some residents of Hayden Island in north Portland are fighting to stop a strip club from moving into their neighborhood.
The proposed club would be located in the building that once housed a Newport Seafood Restaurant next to Interstate 5.
Neighbors said they’ve approached the owners, written letters and gathered petitions to share their opinion. Despite the efforts, neighbors said, they were told the owners continue negotiating with a person who wants to open the strip club.
Roger Staver, president of the neighborhood association, said people living nearby believe a strip club would decrease property value and boost crime.
“It offers the opportunity for criminal activity, for drug activity and for the kinds of things we dont want to see going on the island,” Staver said.

Man Survives Shooting Outside Strip Club

PORTLAND, Ore. — A man suffered a minor head wound Monday night in a shooting outside Club 205 in southeast Portland.
Police said an officer was flagged down in the 9900 block of Southeast Stark Street after a report of gunfire in the strip club’s parking lot at 10:11 p.m.
The victim was inside the strip club and was walking out to his car when the gunman tried to rob him, according to witnesses. Those witnesses saw the robber put a gun to the man’s head and demand all of his money.
Witnesses said the victim suddenly ducked and the gunman pulled the trigger. The bullet grazed the victim’s head and the gunman ran away, police said.

PORTLAND, Ore. – Strip clubs get health inspections too, if they serve food. This week’s Restaurant Report Card takes us to a well-known club in Portland to see how it rates with the health department.
This place has gotten a low score in the past, and the latest big inspection shows – once again – a list of violations.
The Acropolis has a reputation for its steak. Customers say it is cheap … and tasty.
However, the latest score for this strip club is 75 out of a possible 100, making its score just 6 points shy of failing given that below 70 is a failing score. The inspector found raw steak in the temperature danger zone and dried blood on the scale – among other problems.

“It’s a strong acting role in addition to singing and dancing,” Johnson said about playing the character of Gypsy. “It’s nice to be able to constantly learn something new. It never gets old.”
“Gypsy” presented Johnson with two challenges: playing a character from 14-23 years old and a burlesque dancer, which means giving the audience the illusion of nudity.
Johnson said she tried to pick up on the nuances of the different ages she plays as the character develops and matures.
“Those transitions are difficult to convey,” she said. “How does a 16-year-old hold her shoulders and how does a 22-year-old confident woman hold her shoulders?”
As the confident burlesque dancer Gypsy, Johnson had to get over the mental hurdle of doing a strip tease on stage.

Many people in Portland used to brag about the city’s high number of strip clubs and porn shops. Portlanders took pride in their city’s illicit businesses. However, the jokes are not quite as common anymore, as Portland has woken up to a serious tragedy that occurs here every day: human trafficking.
Recently it has come to Portland’s attention that human trafficking has become a huge problem here.
According to the United States Department of Justice, approximately 300,000 youths are trafficked for sexual exploitation. Every year Portland is ranked second in the United States for minor sex trafficking.
More and more facts like these are surfacing, making people realize that the problem is not just overseas, but occurring right in Portland’s own backyard. One of the reasons Portland is such a hot spot for human trafficking is because of its position along the I-5 corridor, as well as its many ports along the Willamette River.

Fight begins at strip club, ends with woman swinging machete at boyfriend

A spat that began at a Milwaukie strip club ended with a West Linn woman’s arrest in the early hours of Thursday morning, after she allegedly swung a machete at her boyfriend.
West Linn police arrested Amanda Lubinsky, 24, at an apartment complex in the Robinwood area after a next-door neighbor reported the noisy dispute late Wednesday night.
West Linn Detective Sgt. Dave Kempas said the machete was part of the couple’s apartment décor. Lubinsky allegedly tore it from a wall before taking several swings at her boyfriend.

Authorities believe the couple’s fight began at the Dolphin strip club on McLoughlin Boulevard before they brought it home to their apartment on Hidden Springs Road.

I understand that freedom of speech extends to protecting the operation of strip clubs here in Oregon. I’m OK with that. What I do have a problem with is the lewd and provocative signage that is offensive and in your face. For example, there is a strip club in Beaverton on Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway called “The Dolphin II.” It is a tasteful brick building that simply says “A Gentlemen’s Club.” No problem.
If you head just a little farther west on Canyon Road, there is a tasteless string of strip clubs with trashy signage. There is Hotties, a barn-type building, painted black, covered with leaping flames that glow in the dark. The sign shows naked females with devil tails and horns. Next door is the Pussycats, billed as “hotter than Hotties,” also showing naked female forms. Next to that is another strip club boldly advertising Vegas-style VIP lap dances, with private rooms, also depicting naked female forms.
