… It’s nice and warm in here,” Mike Pattison, the family patriarch, told the students. “But this is where Apolo and J. R. learned how to skate.”
The Pattisons traveled to Vancouver to watch the two Olympians they helped produce. They paid $1,200 for four tickets and sat in the front row, the best seats in the house. They watched Ohno win his sixth Winter Olympic medal, the most for an American man, and saw Celski secure his first.
At that moment, the memories flooded back. Like a teenage Ohno break-dancing between skating sessions, performing his patented windmill. Or Celski rolling past adults at age 3, his skates and body nearly equal in size.
“Everything started there,” said Yuki Ohno, Apolo’s father. “That was the beginning.”
Pattison’s West sits on the Pacific Highway near a massage parlor, a storage facility and a chiropractor. The sign out front advertised this week’s adult R&B night.

In the last two decades Richmond has become Vancouver’s new Chinatown, home to the second-biggest Asian community in North America; Asian Canadians now make up about 60% of Richmond’s population.
Stepping into one of Richmond’s shopping malls is a quick trip to the contemporary Orient. Yaohan Centre has a giant pan-Asian supermarket, and Aberdeen Centre is classic, over-the-top Hong Kong, right down to a showy multimedia water-fountain production in the foyer.
There are Sikh temples, the biggest Buddhist temple in North America, Chinese foot massage parlors and herb shops, but I go to Richmond to eat, especially at the Richmond Night Market, open weekends throughout the summer. You can smell the spicy lamb kebabs and sautéed noodles long before you reach the maze of 300 stalls lighted by strings of lights and hazed in plumes of smoke from grilled squid and prawns.

The 2010 Winter Olympics are just days away – and brothels in Vancouver are preparing for an onslaught!
‘Faster, higher, further’ – in the light of the latest information from Vancouver, maybe the Olympic motto should be ‘Faster, harder, wilder’…
BILD has already reported how the Games organisers in Canada have been distributing so-called ‘safe kits’ with condoms to Olympic athletes, coaches and observers.
Now Brandy Sarionder, the owner of a strip club and massage parlour, told the ‘Vancouver Sun’: “We’ve been told that however busy we think we’re going to be, we’re going to be a thousand times busier than that.”
She added: “I’m a little worried about my staff burning out.”
Is it really possible that prostitutes fear burnout from all the Olympic visitors?
The city of 600,000 residents faces the greatest influx in its history with brothels facing greater demand than during the World Exhibition in 1986.

Richard Eitelberg, Hartsko’s founder and president, said his company previously fielded many loan requests from companies on the financial brink. Now, he says, Hartsko can also pick from companies with solid financials that simply can’t get a bank loan. “What we are seeing is better deals than we did in the past,” Mr. Eitelberg says. “We were viable when banks were lending. Now we are overwhelmed.”
Hartsko’s office, which is surrounded by Irish pubs in the Bayside neighborhood of Queens, is a sharp departure from the sterile cubicles and prefabricated offices of most major bank branches. At Hartsko, nine employees vie for space in three modest rooms jammed with computers, printers and fax machines.
The floor below Hartsko was occupied by a massage parlor until about a year ago, when it was closed by the vice squad, Mr. Eitelberg said. An acupuncture clinic took over the space.

… It’s causing a bit of a financial crisis for us,” Davis says. “We’re all relying on the local clientele right now. As more and more (sex) workers come here, our income is being divided even more.”
Davis says that recently she went two days without getting a single call from a client. “Never in my career has that happened before.”
Davis acknowledges that there will be a brief flurry of business while the Olympics are on, but warns any out-of-town escorts to make sure they have a plan in place before heading out there to cash in on it.
“One girl I know came out here from Calgary, thinking she could just find a job at a massage parlour, but no one was hiring. She came without a lot of money in her pocket because she was expecting to be working right away and it just wasn’t there. She got stuck.”
