Anyhow back to the Boyz. Randy’s a guy after my own heart, who has carefully crafted and nurtured his blue collar street cred since back in his Portland Fire Bureau days, and has been a reliable populist icon for the marginalized East Side. Not a surprise then that he came out for Jefferson, who upon embarking on his elective political career, left the environs of the somewhat upscale and reliably progressive Beaumont-Wilshire neighborhood, to buy a home in the decidedly grittier, and less reliably liberal east Parkrose area. I lived and worked in Parkrose for several years back in the eighties, and the eclectic mix of light manufacturing, weekly rental motels, massage parlors and strip joints, it was a world away from Northwest or the Hawthorne. In a word, this ain’t Portlandia.

Portland Massage Parlors: Bridgetown Comedy Festival: Margaret Cho, Andy Dick, Pete Holmes, and more

This was a Bridgetown edition of “This is Not Happening,” a storytelling series hosted by comic Ari Shaffir, in which comedians move out of the comfort zone of delivering their act to share tales on a theme. Saturday’s theme was “Shame,” but before any of the performers could get to that, Shaffir contended with some technical glitches. As in, the lights going off as he was trying to introduce the show. As if that wasn’t trying enough, some persistent music tinkled away, much to Shaffir’s hilarious dismay: comedy, he said, “the least respected art form in the world.”
When the comics weren’t remarking on the oddness of telling these stories of humiliation on a Saturday afternoon, they were delving into embarrassing recollections involving sex, bodily functions gone awry, blackout drinking and other humbling moments.
The comics included Brendan McGowan, Pete Holmes, Andy Dick and Margaret Cho. While Dick and Cho are the best-known names, Pete Holmes made me laugh the most, with a tale about visiting a massage parlor in Amsterdam with his girlfriend that he stubbornly kept thinking was a place to get an actual massage instead of, well, let’s say satisfaction of another sort.

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland has become one of the largest hubs for child sex trafficking, and notorious 82nd Avenue is at the core of the business, according to a story aired Wednesday night on ABC’s “Nightline” news magazine program.
According to Nightline, Northeast and Southeast 82nd Avenue is so well-known in the sex trade that it has its own nickname “the track.” The program said Portland has also earned a nickname – “Pornland” – due to the high number of strip joints and massage parlours in the city.
Investigators with Nightline said many of the teen girls working the street came from good homes, somehow got into bad situations and now feel they can’t escape them. The girls are often brought to Portland from other places, the investigators said.

Portland Massage Parlors: Voyeuristic play offers plenty to look at, not much to care about

Two female characters–Sandy and Heather, who are both hookers working out of a massage parlour–present similar obstacles to us giving a fig about them: Sandy (Megan McGeough) is sweet, but most of us would feel she settles for less; Heather (Tara Pratt) is a hottie. The third woman, Beth (Claire Lindsay) is engaged to Curt, and she’s one cold fish. So who do we care about?
After a bungled raid on the massage parlour, Curt strikes up a friendship with Sandy. Beth is furious, Curt is bewildered, and Doug and Heather hook up.
Sabrina Evertt, director and artistic producer of Twenty-Something Theatre, has once again chosen a play with appeal to an audience of 20 or 30-somethings. All five of the characters are youngish and uncertain about meeting their goals–assuming they have any. This is not an uncommon state in which to find oneself–young or old.

Pratt, as Heather, has a couple of good drunk scenes, and it’s pretty funny when buck naked Doug flashes his badge at her in the massage parlour.

Louisiana: An attorney is charging a class action suit on behalf of Filipino teachers against employment agencies. They were recruited to teach in Louisiana schools, but were thrust into massive debt, unsavory living conditions, and in effect, indentured servitudes. The teachers also had to pay exorbitant amount of application fees, transportation cost, housing costs, and demanded 30% of their salaries to the agencies.
Oregon: A TV show highlights human trafficking and child prostitution in Portland. Due to its its location on the Interstate 5 Corridor, Portland provides fertile ground for those who make money off of exploiting children.
Alaska: Nonprofits and police reach out women who are prostituted on the street. According to the report, many run away children are victimized by the prostitution. And chronic runaways, in particular, were prostituted at one point.
Georgia: Massage parlor law becomes effective today in Macon. The new legislation allows law enforcement not only to go after the employees but also the owners and operators of the businesses that hire unlicensed masseuses. Prior to the enactment, only the employees were punished for offenses like prostitution massage parlors.

In California, a law was passed last year that sought to “put the unsavory past behind us,” as Bill Brown, director of government and industry relations for the American Massage Association told the . The law made it possible to grant state certification to massage therapists who complete 250 or more hours of training and who pass a test that include questions about ethics as well as anatomy.
However, some say the law has done little to de-stigmatize the industry, or crack down on the prostitution rings that use massage parlors as fronts. “I think anybody that really wants to make a business knows they can get around anything,” said Eileen. “A lot of massage businesses are out-call businesses, which are very hard to police, because you don’t have a legal address. They’re businesses where you call them on their cell and they arrive at your place. It’s really unusual for someone to check for credentials.”

A Portland, Oregon masseuse, 54, has accused Gore, 62, of sexual abuse after a three-hour $540 massage session in October 2006 according to Police Reports which Page Six and the National Enquirer are following. At this time, Gore was in Portland to speak about climate change.
As proof of the incident, the woman saved the pants she wore that night, which has some suspicious stains on them.
The masseuse kept mum for years on her run-in with Gore, but decided to come forward in light of his divorce with Tipper Gore (Supposedly she always had a raised eye brow about her hubby’s frequent visits to massage parlors). The woman’s lawyer did contact police in December 2006 about her victimization by Gore, but she ignored police interviews.
