The video severely damaged the organization’s credibility and dried up much of its funding, but a Government Accountability Office report later charged that the videos were edited in a misleading manner and that ACORN had not mismanaged its federal funds.

London: A new study has revealed that men visit prostitutes for a variety of reasons, many of which vary by culture. Social acceptance of prostitution makes it more likely for men to seek out prostitutes, as do certain sexual attitudes. For some men, the risk is part of the appeal.

Because of the danger of underreporting by men reluctant to admit their prostitution-related activities, other researchers have used arrest data to extrapolate out the number of men frequenting prostitutes. Those studies estimate that about 2 percent to 4 percent of American men have visited a prostitute in the last year, said Devon Brewer of the Seattle-based consulting firm Interdisciplinary Scientific Research, who has conducted these studies.

Hobbyists or “sex tourists” — the kind of men who post on message boards that review call girls — tend to see frequenting prostitutes as a lifestyle and have much larger numbers of sex partners compared with occasional johns, Monto said. In fact, the reasons why men visit prostitutes are rather unsurprising, according to Monto.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Portland Loo might be the most loved public toilet — not that there’s much competition.
A lack of adequate public restrooms is an old complaint in cities across America. The bathrooms, when you can find one, are often filthy and smelly, and a magnet for drug users and vandals. Businesses such as McDonald’s and Starbucks often serve as the restroom of last resort. 
Big cities from New York to San Francisco have bought high-tech, self-cleaning automatic toilets, with mixed results. In one high-profile failure, Seattle installed five such toilets in 2004 — at a cost of $5 million — only to sell them on eBay four years later because of problems with drug use and prostitution.

Editing! At one point the show cut from the blue-and-black filter of the frozen North, all the way over to the washed-out palette of the Red Wastes, jerking the viewer way over to the opposite side of the color wheel. There was also scene of Theon sexing up a girl which cut over to more sexy times at Littlefinger’s brothel. Both edits were kind of on-the-nose; it was as if the director jumped out and said “Hey, look at this juxtaposition!” However, I do appreciate how well the show segues from differing parts of the world. Even if the edits do have a bit too much of a “ta-da!” quality to them, the fact remains that a series with zillions of characters, locations, and story threads is sewn together pretty nicely. Here’s hoping they can keep that up as the plots get more convoluted.

A Colorado man who has been identified in a series of attacks on Portland prostitutes was charged in King County this week for raping a Seattle woman at knifepoint.
Cops think Courtney Wayne Dawson, 37, raped women whole traveling for business and in the Seattle case conducted the assault in a Hertz rental. A warrant has been issued for his arrest, and he remains at large.

“Detectives from the Portland Police Bureau’s sex crimes and human-trafficking Unit have identified the defendant as a suspect in a series of attacks on prostitutes in their state.”
Police believe last July that Dawson confronted two Portland prostitutes and threatened them with a knife. They say he raped one of the women. In the second case, his victim fought back when he tried to rape her. She escaped with stab wounds.

Kenneth H. White, 22, pleaded not guilty Wednesday, April 4, to two counts of first-degree promoting prostitution and unlawful imprisonment in addition to the commercial sexual abuse charge.

The promoting prostitution charges allege he compelled both alleged victims to sell themselves “by threat or force,” according to charging papers.

The case surfaced after one of the alleged victims, a 17-year-old Oregon girl, met the two through a third person and they encouraged her to prostitute, police said. Phillips allegedly drove the girl to Gresham, Ore., on March 15 to meet a man for sex, according to court documents. Then, police allege, Phillips kept the money paid to the girl.

After Phillips reportedly took the 17-year-old girl to Portland to prostitute, White provided phone numbers to call to set up “dates,” according to court documents.

This unsolved murder is from deep in the cold case files.
On July 3, 1970, Portland police were called to Southwest Third Avenue and Salmon Street, where they found a 48-year-old man with a severe head injury. 
Five days later, the man died at a hospital.
Cold case investigator Terry Wagner said the victim, LeRoy Flisram, was a working-class man.
Authorities said Flisram had been paid and was likely drinking at The Lotus Bar. But he never made it home that night and police believe the motive for the crime was robbery. 
Wagner said one possibility was that Flisram may have been the victim of a trick roll.  A trick roll is where a prostitute targets a subject in a bar and tricks the person into going outside, where the person is robbed.

Police: Seattle rape suspect may be Portland serial rapist

A man investigated for serial rape of Portland prostitutes is also being investigated for a rape case in Seattle, and police say the man may be a corrections officer.
Last year in Portland, a man confront two prostitutes and threatened them with a knife. He raped one of the women. The other fought back when he tried to rape her and escaped with stab wounds.
Records show the person of interest in the Portland cases lives out of state with his family and that in one of those attacks the suspect drove a rental car. Police learned the car was rented in July 2011.

Springer is also now an oral historian. Family friend Dave Mazza started filming “Frank’s Town” about a year ago. It’s a documentary about Portland during Springer’s lifetime.
“He’s a wonderful source of information and it’s a lot of important history that needs to be preserved,” Mazza said.
“It’s not often you find someone who’s such an important part of a city and institution.”
And Springer is happy to talk all day.
“At 100, I’m so old I can say what I want to,” he said Saturday and laughed.
Springer started with the Police Bureau in November 1938 as a patrolman.
He quickly worked up to lieutenant and played a large role in shutting down illegal gambling and prostitution in the city as head of the Vice Squad. In 1962, he became captain and then inspector shortly after.

Portland parade for centenarian ex-cop
PORTLAND, Ore., March 23 (UPI) — Portland, Ore., police say they’ll pull out all the stops when they hold a parade in honor of 100-year-old former Inspector Frank Springer.
Springer served on the Portland force from the Depression until the Nixon administration and is the oldest living officer in the city.
The Police Bureau said in a written statement Friday the parade Saturday in the city’s Brooklyn neighborhood would feature a marching band, vintage cars and the department’s own Portland Police Highland Guard Pipes and Drums.
Springer, who has lived in Brooklyn for more than 70 years, received his badge in 1938 and worked in patrol, the jail and harbor patrol. He was commander of the vice squad in the 1950s amid a crackdown on gambling and prostitution.
