Letters: Should we allow a private casino?

Dear Oregon voters: If you are going to be naive enough to vote to guarantee a lifetime of income to a couple of guys from Lake Oswego who want to open a casino, I hope you’ll also consider my brothel. It will also create jobs, generate income for schools and deliver money to counties around the state. Except, unlike those cheapskates, I’ll give 50 percent of my profits to the state instead of a measly 25 percent. After all, I’m not actually doing anything, just like they aren’t.
However, I do like their idea of not putting their casino near where they live. They’ll dump the casino in a more run-down part of town, but I want a classier place for my customers. I was thinking that downtown Lake Oswego would be a great location.

So far, as part of their grass-roots project, roughly a dozen young Christian men and women have made Barberry Village their home. Their goal: Create a sense of community in a chaotic neighborhood overrun with drugs, prostitution and gangs.

Van Noy, a 2008 graduate of Sherwood High School, was one of the 10 church members from Solid Rock Church in Portland who traveled to Happy Home for the Handicapped in Shimoga, India, this July. The team, ranging from ages 17- 40 also spent four days at rehabilitation centers in the city of Calcutta for girls who had been rescued from prostitution.

Fritz acknowledged Monday that some provisions, like the ban on 16-ounce cans, may yet be changed. She also said she’d explore other measures, including expanding the zone, if a ban merely pushes the problem elsewhere. But she dismissed complaints of discrimination, saying that unlike the drug and prostitution zones, no people would be banned—only liquor sales. She also trumpeted ongoing treatment-based efforts to combat public intoxication.

Ore. man charged with sex trafficking
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
PORTLAND, Ore. — An Oregon man has been charged with sex trafficking in Washington state and Nevada involving a 13-year-old girl.
A federal grand jury in Portland indicted 33-year-old Lendrick Lee Thomas earlier this month on five counts of sex trafficking and transportation across state lines with the intent to engage in prostitution.
The indictment alleges that Thomas recruited, harbored, maintained and provided a minor female in reckless disregard of the fact that she was under 18 and would be caused to engage in a commercial sex act.
A conviction for sex trafficking of a minor carries a mandatory minimum 10-year sentence to a maximum of life in prison.
A federal judge on Thursday ordered Thomas to remain in custody as a flight risk and danger to the community pending trial.

Moodie and Lawler arrived at Shoreditch House, a fancy members-only club in London, expecting to find the place crawling with A-listers, but instead they found only Claudia Winkleman, Billie Piper, and Paul Whitehouse. We went to the trouble of verifying that these weren’t just names the authors made up to mess with us: they are, respectively, a TV presenter, the lady from Secret Diary of a Call Girl, and some sort of comedian. And even these guests weren’t living it up: Moodie and Lawler describe “near-silence” at the event. One person quoted in the report describes it as being “like a wake,” which is appropriate as Madge requested that all her guests wear black.

Portland man charged in forced prostitution of 13-year-old

A 22-year-old Portland man faces federal sex-trafficking charges for allegedly transporting a 13-year old girl to three other states where he forced her into prostitution and beat her when she resisted.
Jefferson Bryant Davis, 22, appeared before U.S. Magistrate Court Judge Janice Stewart today who denied him bail. A jury trial for the sex-trafficking and transportation counts has been set for October 19, 2010, according to a U.S. Department of Justice press release.
According to the indictment, Davis transported the girl from Portland to Washington, California and Nevada with the intent that she engage in prostitution. He allegedly beat her and threatened her when she tried to refuse.

As The Oregonian’s Allan Brettman reported last week, text messages on the phone linked the girl to someone believed to be her pimp.

Once young girls develop a bond with a pimp, however, it’s difficult to retrieve them. A police officer swooping in can make a difference, but only if he or she has the legal authority to help the girl and a safe place to lodge her, away from her pimp. Getting her to testify against him is another battle. If the girl is just returned “home” (often to foster care), she is almost certain to return to prostitution.

But the problem has become so evident that the Portland area was even featured in a recent Dan Rather television special: “Pornland, Oregon: Child Prostitution in Portland.”
The TV show told viewers something that local law-enforcement officials already knew: Child prostitution is a national problem. And Portland, due to its location on the Interstate 5 corridor, provides fertile ground for those who make money from the entrapment and abuse of children. In fact, a U.S. Department of Justice study has ranked Portland and Seattle among 12 hub cities where traffickers recruit teenagers for sex work and move them around the country.
