Efforts to stop child sex trafficking featured

The long-running hit TV show “America’s Most Wanted” will spotlight the efforts of the Vancouver Police Department to curb child sex trafficking in a special segment expected to air this month.
Producers and TV cameramen joined Vancouver police investigators for a sting May 2 called “Operation Rescue and Restore.” During the sting, an undercover officer arranged “dates” with girls who advertised on online sites.
The sting did not net any arrests or the recovery of underage girls, but investigators were able to rescue a 5-year-old girl who was being watched by prostitutes, said Vancouver police Sgt. John Chapman. Chapman said he has an active investigation relating to the sting.

Human trafficking: Gangs today are more likely to make money from prostitution than drugs, Underhill says, so law enforcement must look for human-trafficking victims rather than just drugs when they encounter gang members and their “girlfriends.”

Also responsible for the cognitive dissonance produced by this production is that the women characters are, by and large, spectacularly arrayed in garments outrageous, gaudy and gay (thanks to costume designer Melissa Heller). La Merquise de Merteuil, for instance, wears a lacy, flowery peplum over her colorful panniers — those hip bustles as worn by Marie Antoinette that push out the sides of skirts until they are almost perpendicular to the body. Under this construction is a sheer white petticoat, and under that, white thigh-high stockings. High-heeled shoes of glittery silver, and more thigh-high stockings, these topped with pert bows, are sported by Emilie (Megan Carver), a courtesan oft visited by Valmont. We cannot take our eyes off this costuming, which shouts the language of comedy, of the absurd or the carnivalesque: such a contrast to the characters’ world-weary sophistication.

PORTLAND, Ore. – Candidate for Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum is promising to crack down on teen prostitution, but at the same time she has a link – though family – to a website accused of being a primary conduit for human trafficking.
Rosenblum is married to Richard Meeker, the owner of the newspaper Willamette Week. The newspaper’s online classifieds are run by Backpage.com. Willamette Week does not post sex ads, but nationally Backpage is accused of dealing in teen prostitution.

The current Oregon and Washington attorneys general are among 44 who signed on to a national letter to Backpage last summer, saying the site is a “hub” for teen prostitution and needs to change.

Backpage has promised law enforcement it is cracking down on ads for teen prostitution but according to Portland police, they’re not seeing it.

I think people’s perception regarding our change has something to do with our look. If you look at Shallow Life, people didn’t understand the way we were dressed – they were costumes. They were meant to make fun of the ‘shallow life.’ I was dressed up like a ‘pop princess’ and Andrea (Ferro) was dressed up like a ‘hip-hop pimp.’ People would come up to us and say, “You guys changed your look?!” I said, “What the fuck?! You think we’re really going to be dressed up like that?! Didn’t you see that we even enhanced my boobs on the photos just to make fun of this fake world?!” I bet you if we would have gone with the typical black look people wouldn’t have said a thing. That’s frustrating because you have to go with the most obvious choice, the more bland choice, so people will get it.

A lack of adequate public restrooms is an old complaint in cities across America. The bathrooms, when you can find one, are often filthy and smelly, and a magnet for drug users and vandals. Businesses such as McDonald’s and Starbucks often serve as the restroom of last resort.
Big cities from New York to San Francisco have bought high-tech, self-cleaning automatic toilets, with mixed results. In one high-profile failure, Seattle installed five such toilets in 2004—at a cost of $5 million—only to sell them on eBay four years later because of problems with drug use and prostitution.

“I used to be a thief. I used to be a dope dealer. I used to be a pimp. I used to be thug, a burglar. When I left from here, I left all that behind me and decided to come back and make it right with the city of Portland and the youth in the community,” McNair says.
McNair says he’s had a call from God to help young people, so he’ll turn himself in as part of Project Clean Slate.>/p>
