Ore. man charged with sex trafficking

PORTLAND, Ore. — An Oregon man has been charged with sex trafficking in Washington state and Nevada involving a 13-year-old girl.
A federal grand jury in Portland indicted 33-year-old Lendrick Lee Thomas earlier this month on five counts of sex trafficking and transportation across state lines with the intent to engage in prostitution.
The indictment alleges that Thomas recruited, harbored, maintained and provided a minor female in reckless disregard of the fact that she was under 18 and would be caused to engage in a commercial sex act.
A conviction for sex trafficking of a minor carries a mandatory minimum 10-year sentence to a maximum of life in prison.
A federal judge on Thursday ordered Thomas to remain in custody as a flight risk and danger to the community pending trial.

PORTLAND, OR—Jefferson Davis, 22, appeared today for a detention hearing, following his initial appearance before United States Magistrate Court Judge Janice Stewart on Friday August 13, 2010. Davis was indicted by a federal grand jury on August 10, 2010 and arrested in Portland on August 12, 2010. He is charged in six counts with sex trafficking, transportation, and the forced labor of a 13-year-old female with the intent to engage in prostitution. Judge Sullivan ordered that Davis be held in custody pending trial as a flight risk and danger to the community.
A jury trial has been set for October 19, 2010. The indictment alleges that Davis transported the minor female from Portland, Oregon to Washington, California, and Nevada with the intent that she engage in prostitution. Force, fraud, and coercion were used to maintain the minor. Davis is alleged to have struck, beaten, and otherwise physically assaulted the minor whenever she refused to work as a prostitute.

We went to the trouble of verifying that these weren’t just names the authors made up to mess with us: they are, respectively, a TV presenter, the lady from Secret Diary of a Call Girl, and some sort of comedian. And even these guests weren’t living it up: Moodie and Lawler describe “near-silence” at the event. One person quoted in the report describes it as being “like a wake,” which is appropriate as Madge requested that all her guests wear black.

Portland man charged in forced prostitution of 13-year-old

A 22-year-old Portland man faces federal sex-trafficking charges for allegedly transporting a 13-year old girl to three other states where he forced her into prostitution and beat her when she resisted.
Jefferson Bryant Davis, 22, appeared before U.S. Magistrate Court Judge Janice Stewart today who denied him bail. A jury trial for the sex-trafficking and transportation counts has been set for October 19, 2010, according to a U.S. Department of Justice press release.
According to the indictment, Davis transported the girl from Portland to Washington, California and Nevada with the intent that she engage in prostitution. He allegedly beat her and threatened her when she tried to refuse.

The story follows stage mother Rose as she pushes her daughters June and Louise  toward stardom in the 1930s. Louise becomes a striptease artist and takes the name Gypsy Rose Lee. 
“It’s a strong acting role in addition to singing and dancing,” Johnson said about playing the character of Gypsy. “It’s nice to be able to constantly learn something new. It never gets old.”
“Gypsy” presented Johnson with two challenges: playing a character from 14-23 years old and a burlesque dancer, which means giving the audience the illusion of nudity.
Johnson said she tried to pick up on the nuances of the different ages she plays as the character develops and matures.
“Those transitions are difficult to convey,” she said. “How does a 16-year-old hold her shoulders and how does a 22-year-old confident woman hold her shoulders?”
As the confident burlesque dancer Gypsy, Johnson had to get over the mental hurdle of doing a strip tease on stage.

As The Oregonian’s Allan Brettman reported last week, text messages on the phone linked the girl to someone believed to be her pimp.

Once young girls develop a bond with a pimp, however, it’s difficult to retrieve them. A police officer swooping in can make a difference, but only if he or she has the legal authority to help the girl and a safe place to lodge her, away from her pimp. Getting her to testify against him is another battle. If the girl is just returned “home” (often to foster care), she is almost certain to return to prostitution.

A Vancouver community group is lobbying the city to get a sex novelty shop out of its neighbourhood.
A branch of the Lower Mainland chain Fantasy Factory moved into a storefront at Kingsway and Fraser Street in East Vancouver last fall.
The store advertises the sale of adult videos and magazines, lingerie, performance enhancers, and sex toys.
However, members of the Dickens Community group want it gone.
Director Peter Wohlwend said the group has spent the past 10 years trying to improve the area, and the store is a major setback.
“We have been fighting here the prostitution, drug dealing, and pimps in this neighbourhood in the last 10 years, and this sort of says, ‘Well, it’s okay, come and pick up a hooker here.’”

This problem is so pervasive that the Portland area was even featured in a recent Dan Rather television special: “Pornland, Oregon: Child Prostitution in Portland.”

In fact, a U.S. Department of Justice study has ranked Portland and Seattle among 12 hub cities where traffickers recruit teenagers for sex work and move them around the country.
