But this show is less concerned with Weegee’s biography. Instead, it looks at Weegee’s work through a single viewfinder that exceeds time and geography; from New York in the ’30s and ’40s to Portland in the present day, they still bewitch and resonate.
Curator Lamb says she and Wagle chose works that might remind people that the asphalt jungle of Weegee’s New York can be found here in Portland, specifically in Old Town, where the White Box gallery is located.
On Northwest Couch Street, crime, mayhem, street walkers and homeless people are defining characteristics of life in a part of town that has been on the cusp of extraordinary change.

To convict Cruz of second-degree assault, Bailey had to determine that Cruz acted with “extreme indifference to the value of human life” when he drove drunk Nov. 27.
The defense did not argue the facts of the case, acknowledging Cruz’s blood alcohol content that night measured more than twice the legal limit at 0.20, as well as his high rate of speed and reckless driving. But defense attorney John Tyner III argued that his client did not exercise extreme indifference.
The night after Thanksgiving last year, Cruz went out drinking with a friend of nearly 20 years. His friend, Richard Butler, didn’t trust his own sobriety so he handed Cruz the keys to his 2007 Ford truck. Cruz drove the two from a Gresham bar to a Portland strip club, then toward Butler’s home in Sherwood.

State police report encountering three to five trafficking victims a week. Although the Sexual Assault Resource Center, an advocacy group that offers services to Portland-area victims, estimates that it handled 75 cases in 2009, it also says that for every girl in its system 10 more are still being exploited.
“I just believe with my whole heart that people across the community would be appalled if they knew what was going on,” said Sgt. Mike Geiger, who heads Portland’s sexual assault detail.
Portland’s legal commercial sex industry is the biggest per capita in the country, according to a report by researchers at Willamette Law School’s International Human Rights Clinic. Former CBS News anchor Dan Rather once called the city “Pornland.” The city has more strip clubs per capita than glittery Las Vegas, and a tolerant attitude toward sex, both legal and illegal.

I didn’t know which chili was his, but I hoped I’d like it. Failing that, I would depend on the skilled repartee and agility of another judge — former Steeler Franco “Immaculate Reception” Harris — to get us out of there.

Portland’s culinary scene has gotten attention for the best of culinary trends: we’ve got your heritage pork (and chefs who fight outside strip clubs over it), we’ve got food carts and we’ve got vegan cuisine. Until now, one thing that Portland’s food scene has been lacking is a legitimate seafood spot.
To our rescue comes a man who takes his fish very seriously. So seriously, in fact, that a large red fish is tattooed across his forearm. Trent Pierce, formerly a sous chef at this year’s new Foster Burger, is the executive chef and he is predicting good things to come for FIN’s July 30 opening. When asked what the restaurant will be doing differently than the present (yet small) seafood scene in Portland, Pierce is thinking dynamically.

Alabama football coach Nick Saban likened the sports agents who prey on college athletes to pimps this week. Hmm, let’s see if we have this straight. It’s OK for coaches (the same guys who get paid millions of dollars while their athletes don’t get a penny) to seek out and actually interview for new jobs while they are still at their current job but as soon as a player tries to take care of his future he’s nothing more than a prostitute seeking out a pimp. And, oh yeah, it’s also perfectly fine for a coach to cheat and break dozens of NCAA rules and then bolt for another million dollar deal elsewhere before the sanctions come down. But when a player breaks rules and accepts money the school throws his Heisman Trophy in the garbage. Funny how that works.

But that’s exactly what happened when the Masonic & Eastern Star home became McMenamins Grand Lodge. The company renovated the building, constructed in 1922, into a monolithic attraction, complete with 77 hotel rooms, a soaking pool, four eateries, a disc golf course, live music and movies a decade ago. The conveniences have been modernized, but the Grand Lodge is still rich in history, with artwork and photographs from its heyday dotting the walls. “There has been a lot of history over the years,” said Portland-based McMenamins historian Tim Hills.
