While Louis (Dano) observes, the penniless Henry (Kline) dabs shoe polish on his ankles because he can’t afford socks and swans around uttering would-be sparkling lines like, “I haven’t been sleeping right since my eye mask disappeared” and “My great opus was stolen by a Swiss hunchback!” Often Kline gesticulates and declaims. Occasionally he does an odd little dance. Never is he funny.
Irrelevant supporting characters linger in the background. There is a girl (Katie Holmes) who works at a magazine with Louis, but though he gazes upon her bra strap with longing, it is only because he wants to try on her lingerie. A taciturn wild-haired neighbor (John C. Reilly) of Henry turns out to have the following big secret: He speaks in falsetto.
The makers of the film (Shari Springer-Berman and Robert Pulcini, the “American Splendor” directors, working from a novel by Jonathan Ames) seem certain that you don’t need a story if you’ve got two hours of campy histrionics. But just to be extra-wacky, they have Louis repeatedly put on frilly underthings and get spanked by a prostitute. Ha ha. Look at the man. He’s dressed like a lady.

With Oregon’s expansive free speech laws offering little legal recourse, Smart and at least one other mainstream entrepreneur have decided to control what they can — their own business interests — by packing up and moving out.
“I really believe spaces have energy. We put a lot of love into it here,” Smart said one afternoon last week, standing inside the Tulen Center’s West Slope studio, tears rolling down her cheeks. “We’ll take that with us.”
The departure from the 10000 block of Southwest Canyon Road began two days later, when Smart and others made a ceremonial 2-mile walk to a new location on Southwest Scholls Ferry Road. In August, nearby business Sameday Auto Scratch & Dent Repair plans to move a mile and half west, away from the adult-themed neighborhood that also includes Hotties strip club.

By the end of this year, Portland hopes to have its first school for Johns up and running. The program is based on the idea that Johns, men who hire prostitutes, can make a significant difference in stopping prostitution. As was recently underscored, the majority of prostitutes do not sell themselves out of choice, but are forced into it by pimps who often keep them in slave-like conditions. Demand dictates supply. If the men stop buying, the pimps will stop selling.
Portland is ranked second in the country for human trafficking and modern-day slavery, and the school is one of the actions the city is taking against such crimes. Similar programs have already been established in over 50 other cities throughout the country, including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Denver, Chicago, and Pittsburgh. (See the full list here.)

… 900,000 federal grant will help establish shelter for underage women in sex industry
Published: Thursday, July 29, 2010, 6:55 PM Updated: Thursday, July 29, 2010, 6:55 PM
Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., will announce Saturday that the YWCA of Greater Portland will receive a $900,000 federal grant to establish a shelter in Portland for underage victims of human sex trafficking.
The shelter will be the first in the city, which the Justice Department study ranks — along with Seattle — among 12 “hub” cities where traffickers recruit teenagers for sex work and move them around the country, said Eric Brown, YWCA executive director.
This will be the first chunk of $3 million to $5 million needed to get the shelter operating, Brown said. The amount is needed for the multiple therapeutic and rehabilitative services it will offer. It’s hoped the shelter could open next year.

… The next morning in my e-mail basket was a song from Marv,” Horn recalls.
“He caught me at a good time,” Ross says. “I was familiar with the book, and I was just in one of those phases where I was writing every day and really plugged in. It was one of those things that just popped out. Later on, the writing got tougher, and slower.” Eventually, Stephen Alexander (who also wrote arrangements) and Karl Mansfield also wrote some music and lyrics.
The resulting show moves through a series of scenes and songs about such sexual topics as male and female sex organs, intercourse, masturbation and aphrodisiacs. The language is frank, the tone is sassy, the mood is mostly light and winking. But some segments tread into more complex emotional territory, dealing with such subjects as prostitution, birth control and abortion.

Dominic Ford Launches Gay Talent Contest
Jul 23rd, 2010 08:59 AM
VANCOUVER, Wash.—Eponymous gay porn studio DominicFord has launched a new talent-discovery contest based on a popular Hollywood reality show model. “So You Think You Can Fuck” offers pros and amateurs alike the chance to prove they have what it takes to become a breakout adult entertainment star.
An open “casting call” went out Thursday, inviting online entries at SoYouThinkYouCanFuck.net. Submissions will be accepted through Aug. 9. DominicFord will select 10 finalists—five tops and five bottoms—and invite them to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Aug. 16-23 to participate in filming segments for the contest, which will take the form of an online, viewer-participation show.
The studio tapped popular gay adult performer Matthew Rush (Voldemorecock in the Grabby Award-winning Whorrey Potter and the Sorcerer’s Balls earlier this year) to host the online game show, which DominicFord eventually expects to release on DVD. Each week, a bottom will pick the name of a scene partner from the “top hat.” The pair then will spin a Wheel of Fortune-style wheel to determine the set for their shoot. Possible sets include bar, casino, jail cell and bedroom, among others.

So here’s the thing: I have to stop the stress of it all from continuing to build or I am totally going to snap a twig in the worst way. I need something new. I will still write and record songs because I’m a songwriter and I love music but I am done with this whole mainstream crossover thing, I’m done with the endless work, I’m done with the ratrace. I can’t stand having to pimp myself out and do things I would not otherwise do in order to get ahead. Fuck that. I’m realizing that my priorities have changed somewhere along the way and I’ve missed out on getting some of the things I actually want in this world (family, free time, privacy, normal everyday life, peace of mind, and FOOD mostly) because I’ve been chasing this other dream for so long. I will still keep moving forward with things musically but at a slower, more hobby-like pace…and on my own terms.

YWCA gets federal funds to shelter sex trafficking victims
Sen. Wyden and others will announce the $900,000 grant on Saturday
By Jennifer Anderson
The Portland Tribune, Jul 29, 2010, Updated 2.2 hours ago
The YWCA of Greater Portland will use $900,000 in federal money to help establish a shelter for victims of human sex trafficking, U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden plans to announce in Portland on Saturday.
The funds come after a U.S. Department of Justice study ranked Portland and Seattle among 12 hub cities where traffickers recruit teenagers for sex work and move them around the country.
“One of the problems police have is these girls, when they’re arrested or turn themselves in or want to get out of the life, they have no place to go,” says Tom Towslee, a spokesman for Wyden. “It takes time for police to develop the evidence and case they need against the traffickers. With no place to go, all too often they end up going back into the shadows and often return to the men who abused them in the first place.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Multnomah County may begin a program geared toward first-time offenders who pick up prostitutes in hopes of educating them on how prostitution can negatively affect people’s lives.
County leaders said the prostitution customers, or johns, would pay $1,000 to attend the school, which would earn the county about $1 million per year. If the john doesn’t offend again within six months, their record remains clean.
Officials said they’re considering opening the program in a Gresham building that houses Lifeworks Northwest, a treatment and counseling group. The school would teach johns the effects of prostitution. The goal, county officials said, is to curb prostitution by trying to stop those who pay prostitutes.
Jeri Williams, a program coordinator for the City of Portland, once worked as a prostitute more than 20 years ago.
Williams said her pimp only let her out at night and demanded she return after earning $300 per night, $20 at a time.

Canada: A 59 year old father of three and an art dealer receive 11 year jail sentence for having sex and making pornography of children in Cambodia and Colombia. Victims were as young as eight. Though the man argued that the Canadian sex tourism law does not apply to him because the crime took place in other countries, the judge dismissed his argument and imposed a jail term for 11 years.
District of Columbia: Federal aid may be directed towards assisting shelter programs for the domestic trafficking victims. According to the report, currently, more than 100,000 children of the U.S. citizens are sexually exploited, but there are only 50 beds available nationwide for them.
…
Germany: Germany requested Bulgaria to extradite two Bulgarian citizens over the charges of human trafficking and pimping. The two Bulgarian citizens, a father and his son, exploited at least three women from Bulgaria and Czech Republic with prostitution. They lured the women with a promise of a decent job in Germany and forced them into prostitution upon arrival.
