Tolerance for me but not for thee

Portland is a proud city. One of the things it’s proudest of is its tolerance for different life styles. It’s the reason so many outsiders move here.
Some years ago, the Oregon Supreme Court ruled that full nudity and lap dancing are constitutional. As a result, the city hosts the World Naked Bike Ride, which the Court called “a well established tradition in Portland.” The City of Roses is also the City of Strippers, with more strip clubs per capita than San Francisco and Las Vegas.
If you are gay, lesbian, or transgendered, you’re accepted in Portland. Straight couples, married to each or not, are accepted. Single moms and single dads are accepted. Interracial couples and their children are accepted. Jews are accepted. Muslims are accepted. People of color are accepted. Liberals and libertarians are accepted. Atheists and agnostics are accepted. Even Californians are now accepted.

RIDGEFIELD, Wash. — A report of a carjacking off Interstate 5 in Ridgefield turned out to be a violent dispute between the victim, a prostitute and the prostitute’s pimp, deputies said.
Clark County sheriff’s deputies were called to the 179th Street exit near Jollie’s Restaurant and Lounge in the early-morning hours Friday.
A sheriff’s spokesman said the prostitute told the john that she had completed the job, but he disagreed and wanted her to continue. At some point during the disagreement, the prostitute’s pimp stepped in and struck the victim over the head with an unknown object, deputies said.
The fight caused the prostitute to panic and drive away in the victim’s Honda Accord, deputies said, and the pimp ran from the scene.

Portland man pleads guilty to having sex with a 14-year-old girl who was compelled into prostitution by her father

Moments later, the district attorney’s office presented Champagne with a subpoena to appear at next week’s trial of the girl’s father, who is accused of compelling his daughter into prostitution.

The girl also disclosed that her father, James Edward Alderson, 30, had been forcing her into prostitution in Portland in exchange for money and drugs. Portland sex assault investigators called the case unusual, in that a parent was forcing a child into the sex trade.

Detectives said the prostitution began when the girl was 13. Police say her dad solicited men to have sex with her, often in sheds behind friends’ homes. Most of the men were low-level drug dealers, and police say Alderson got his daughter hooked on crack cocaine.

Police took disciplinary action against 23 officers as a result of the 2009 complaints. One officer was terminated. Five other officers resigned or retired while complaints were pending. The report didn’t identify any of these officers or what the complaints involved, and Mary-Beth Baptista, director of the Independent Police Review Division, declined to identify them.
Yet Portland police have said Nicholas Rothwell, a two-year rookie, was fired last year due to his performance on the job. Two of the officers who resigned were Officer Joey Wild, who was sentenced for sexually harassing other female officers and a relative with profane, sexually abusive phone calls on his bureau-issued cell phone, and Rodney Murdock, who resigned shortly after detectives raided his home while he was under criminal investigation amid allegations of inappropriate contact with prostitutes and other women while on duty and after work.

Stripper Loses Lawsuit for Hourly Wages
Exotic dancer Zipporah Foster has lost one of two lawsuits she filed last year against Portland strip clubs seeking hourly wages and back pay.
Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge Kelly Skye ruled May 18 that Foster was an independent contractor, not an employee, when she worked at Exotica International Club for Men.
Therefore, Skye ruled the Northeast Portland club does not owe Foster the money she was suing for — $43,688 in back wages, plus $64,260 in stage fees and tips she claimed she was forced to pay the club’s DJs and bouncers when she worked there from 2003 to 2007.

As previously reported in WW, the lawsuit hinged on the definition of an employee. Most clubs don’t pay strippers hourly wages, saying dancers are “independent contractors.” Many clubs even charge dancers a stage fee, or force them to pay out a portion of their tips.

This story has a happy ending mainly because someone—and not even Reetz is quite sure who; he thinks there were more than one—managed to get to the women during their bus ride. Mack says he was taken “out of the game” from 2001-07 while dealing with legal issues and jail time. According to his website, he spent “almost five years in prison for an attempted murder stemming from the shooting of rapper Brother Luv … .” Public records show that Mack, whose real name is Nate Burke, has a criminal record going back to 1994. The charges range from drug charges to the attempted murder he claims on his site, although he was not convicted on that charge. He served time following that 2001 incident on weapons charges.
“I kept my hand on the pulse at the same time,” he says. “I could hear music, and I knew who was doing what. I put an album out while I was locked up.”
