Citizen of the Year Rita Ezard, director of the Sandy Community Action Center, was profiled in the April 14 issue of The Post.
Here are descriptions of the contributions of the other eight winners in their specific categories of recognition, according to a chamber spokesperson.
Youth Citizen of the Year
Sevy Cushing, 18, is a senior at Sandy High School and a student at ACE Academy of Architecture, Construction and Engineering in Portland.
She has been committed to helping others, and has motivated other teens to commit themselves to various causes.
Most recently, Cushing worked with several of her peers and an adult counselor in a global community service project called Hands of Hope. The teens and their adult counselor spent three weeks in Uganda to help orphans, HIV-affected kids and children of prostitutes.

Well, there’s a thing called “branding” in this country. It’s apparently the only thing the public responds to anymore. So: Obama got elected because he had a good brand, his happy marriage to Michelle is a function of his larger brand strategy, he passed health care reform at a great risk to his brand, etc, etc.
So, the same way the Obamas and the Kardashians and Apple are all brands, Goldman Sachs is a brand. If you’re on Wall Street, it absolutely goes without saying you’ve got acute Goldman envy. You’ll pimp your own daughter to beat its earnings. You’ll quadruple the salary of any of its genius junior traders willing to work for you — and guarantee him a minimum $8 million bonus — and then that trader will spill all your secrets to his buddies back at Goldman Sachs and you can’t even get mad at him, it’s just a testament to how great they are over there at instilling loyalty to the goddamn Goldman brand.

Conservative savior Sarah Palin swooped into liberal Massachusetts yesterday for a rally on the Boston Common. There were lots of old white people, some stupid signs, and a bunch of boring speeches. We mingled. Here’s what we saw.
If one theme stood out through the day — besides taxes and health care and hating the president and a Harry Reid obsession — it would be everyone going out of their way to say that they are, in fact, not racists. And Tea Party “volunteers” were out in force to make sure the big time wackos stayed out of the sight of cameras. The pimp sign below caused a minor scuffle between its owner, Steve from Woburn, and a Tea Party flack in a suit who tried to wrestle it away from his Freedom Grip. Steve won.

It would be impossible to properly put this game in perspective because there is simply too much basketball left to be played. A Phoenix win in Game 2 does not render this useless, but a Phoenix win in Game 3 takes this down a notch. It’s a dangerous thing to put too much emphasis on one win (no matter how great it is) because momentum can swing in the playoffs faster than a stripper comes to you if you look like you have money. Remember when LeBron hit that big winner and everyone fawned over it and ESPN had the nerve to call it one of the ‘biggest shots in playoff history’….and then they lost. So I understand the jubilation and elation surrounding the Blazer Nation (OMG WALT FRAZIER) but just know that there is a lot of hoops to be played.

Fugitive’s life on the run ends at ‘Turning Point’
April 19, 2010, 5:18PM
A wanted fugitive’s life on the lam ended today when 42-year-old Adrian Coleman was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Oregon Fugitive Task Force in Southwest Portland.
U.S. Marshals spokesman Cory M. Cunningham said Coleman was arrested at 1:15 p.m. in front of the aptly named Turning Point apartment complex at 6552 Southwest 19th Avenue.
Cunningham said Coleman had been wanted since 2005 after a parole violation warrant was issued out of Multnomah County. Coleman was convicted of promoting prostitution, which required him to register as a sex offender.
He faces five counts of failure to register as a sex offender, distribution and possession of a controlled substance and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

Former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer said on Monday there are “no coincidences” in the Securities and Exchange Commission filing a lawsuit against Goldman Sachs just as Democrats are about to bring up financial regulatory reform in the Senate.
The SEC, which announced the civil suit Friday, is forbidden by law from acting in concert with the White House in choosing which cases it prosecutes and when to do so.
Asked about the timing of the SEC action during an interview Monday on CNBC, Spitzer, who prosecuted securities fraud as the state’s attorney general, said that “there’s no question the SEC is desperate to prove that it can enforce the law, desperate to bring in the great white whale.”
“This was not a coincidence,” asserted the former Democratic governor, who resigned after an affair with a prostitute became public. “There are no coincidences in this world. None.”

The market awaits further details of Goldman’s and other institutions’ business dealings during the housing boom, and the details will probably be reprehensible. For starters, these firms were well aware that they were gaming Moody’s and S&P, who themselves seemed like willing dupes. Next, facilitating customers to buy credit insurance on products that they did not own is dubious. Especially when these facilitators were aware that the risk models Moody’s and S&P were using to rate these products was busted, and that AIG’s model to price insurance coverage was remarkably flawed. Financial regulatory reform will probably restrict these methods in the future.
Al Capone’s organized crime exploits were notorious, yet he had a strong grip on the political and law enforcement establishments, which allowed him to operate freely in Chicago just “giving the customers what they wanted.” Generally, this was liquor, gambling and prostitution. But as Capone’s exploits grew ever more nefarious for the public and law enforcement to tolerate, including the St. Valentine’s Day massacre, his empire began to crumble. Eventually he was convicted on the relatively innocuous crime of tax evasion.

… Sidenote: Almost any elbow falls under this umbrella, but Garnett’s was definitely a “sucker-elbow,” right? I mean, at least step up and shove someone or, if you’re going to throw punch, throw a real punch. Don’t just blindly throw elbows in a crowd, like some angry sixth grader. Sorry Celtics fans, but it’s time to admit what the rest of us have known for a while: Kevin Garnett is the most obnoxious player in the league.)
5. KEVIN DURANT MEETS THE PLAYOFFS (AND RON ARTEST)
Finally, there was the return of Ron Artest. Nevermind that he looked like homeless male prostitute out there (note the spoltchy facial hair), Artest smothered Kevin Durant all day long, forcing him into rushed shots, blocking his way to open spaces, and generally just making life miserable for the league’s leading scorer. And it’s a good thing he did, because if Durant had been hitting even a little bit, the Thunder might have stolen the game.

Easton said he was fed up with “people ignorantly throwing terms like communism, socialism, Marxism, fascism that they don’t know and they can’t define.”
“It’s a ridiculous movement,” Easton said as he was surrounded by supporters of the movement.
Tea Party activists are especially sensitive to any claim from their critics that they harbor racist thoughts. Activists adamantly state they oppose President Barack Obama’s policies – not his race – although Tea Party protesters have often carried signs and shouted slogans that could be interpreted as racist.
Some Tea Party leaders have said such signs stoke a negative stereotype against the movement, but others – including New York Tea Party gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino – have forwarded e-mails depicting Obama and the first lady as an 80s-era pimp and prostitute and a video of an African tribal dance entitled “Obama Inaugural Rehearsal.”

North Portland resident Alan Gunn had one of the baddest entries into the Pimp‘d Bike contest. His highly customized Surly Pugsley has a lot of nifty touches including homemade coroplast fenders and an Old Man Mountain rear rack. The most amazing thing about this bike are the lights Alan made himself. He spent hours roving obscure web forums to figure out how to make them and they came out gorgeous:
