Rather than making the system more flexible by adding additional busses and bus routes, TriMet’s infatuation with light rail is ensuring that it becomes less flexible. And its only attempt to consider a commute pattern other than to downtown, the westside commuter rail, has proven to be a phenomenal financial disaster. Nevertheless, the planners love rail. They view it as a development tool, where businesses will be born and thrive.
Business owner Gay Stryker doesn’t see it that way.
“If providing more transit to this area is such an issue out here, they should simply increase the bus service,” she said. “But I’m afraid their answer for more transit in Milwaukie will be light rail down McLoughlin and that will destroy all the businesses on either side. People simply do not shop where the MAX is because it is too hard to get in and out of the stores.”
With the exception of strip bars, porn shops and adult arcades, Stryker doesn’t see anything thriving by virtue of light rail.

On the personal level, Patric was arrested for being drunk in public and resisting arrest in Texas six years ago. The charges were later dropped and Patric sued the arresting officer, though he lost the case.
The main vampire/villain, Kiefer Sutherland’s story is classic Hollywood, too, though in a slightly different way: his dad is the legendary Donald Sutherland, and Kiefer was therefore born into movie royalty.
Aged 21 during filming, he’s the most famous of The Lost Boys and has enjoyed huge success since 2001 with the planet-devouring TV drama 24. But in the intervening years he also endured his share of disappointments.
His engagement to Julia Roberts sensationally ended in 1991, after he was caught out in a tryst with a stripper. She fled to Ireland with her new beau — bizarrely enough, none other than Jason Patric.

Adorned in Grace is a nonprofit, used bridal boutique that opens Saturday in Fairview. And sales of 400-plus donated new and used wedding and formal dresses will assist victims of human trafficking. In a press release about the event, the organizers write that “local volunteers are using the symbol of purity to address a growing crime in Portland.”
It’s a fantastic idea.
In recent columns I have written about the sex trafficking of minors in our region, a lot of people have asked how they can help. Here’s an easy, fun way. (Other avenues, of course, abound – including mentoring at-risk youth, helping families in need, donating money to groups fighting human trafficking and supporting various legislation to increase penalties on commercial sex customers who willingly or unknowingly buy sex from minors who have been forced or lured into prostitution.)

Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside is often referred to as “Canada’s poorest postal code.” While it is not especially dangerous, it is an extremely poor neighborhood that is suffering from a massive health epidemic. A poverty cluster-fuck, if you will. According to a United Nations report, 30 percent of the neighborhood’s population suffers from HIV and [fewer than] 70 percent have Hep C. At least one-third are intravenous drug users, with countless more addicted to crack cocaine.
However, the neighborhood’s spirit is very strong and benefits from a lot of amazing community activism. Because it is so dense, and so close to the city’s downtown, it also attracts a lot of media and public attention.
As businesses closed and welfare failed to keep up with inflation, the neighborhood became overrun with drug abuse, homelessness and prostitution. And even though roughly 200 people were dying from overdoses every year, it took years before governments would approve a safe-injection site, which the federal government is now trying to shut down.

A bill that would impose tougher penalties on child sex traffickers and customers of child prostitutes and help their young victims rebuild their lives has passed the Legislature and is headed to the governor’s desk.
…
Fines collected under the law will be deposited into a new Prostitution Prevention and Intervention Account, which will pay to train intervention specialists to work with young prostitutes.
…
Most importantly, Smith said, the new law will put teeth in the goal of diverting minors from a life of prostitution.
Beginning July 1, 2011, the state Department of Social and Health Services will have the power to file a petition to divert a sexually exploited minor from prosecution to mandatory diversion in a secure facility for up to 15 days. Those diverted will not be charged with prostitution, regardless of their prior criminal history.
…
That’s important, she said, because a criminal record can make it hard for former prostitutes to enroll in college or enter a professional field. “You are actually harming them for the rest of their lives.”

Corey Haim Dated Classy Chicks
By FITSNews || Because Corey Haim’s untimely passing is still spiking internet traffic, let’s pause for a moment to meet the last (cough) relationship of the fallen child star’s life, Daisy de la Hoya (a.k.a. “Daisy of Love”).
And yeah … she’s lovely … at least if mannish, over-inked sluts who wear tubing over their stripper heels while they straddle shiny metallic alligators is your thing.
Obviously, it’s not ours. We prefer they straddle shiny metallic crocodiles.
Anyway, if you think we were crass in opening this article with a reference to the traffic-generating potential of Haim’s death … take note of how all of a sudden a bunch of celebrities have discovered who Corey Haim is (was) just in time to start Tweeting about him in sorrowful tones.

The Oregonian’s Joe Rose and Brad Schmidt told us today that the first year of the Westside Express Service, or WES, was a bust for ridership and that federal authorities questioned TriMet’s ridership estimates in seeking federal funds to build the $161 million dollar project. The story is generating a lot of comments at Oregonlive, as well as in the blogosphere, like this piece by the Cascade Policy Institute’s John A. Charles Jr.
Ever heard of “ply-on-foam?” The Daily Journal of Commerce has an interesting story about the invention, which is a plywood-Styrofoam form of wall construction, created by Green One Construction. The article says the material is being used in Washington County residential construction.
The Forest Grove News-Times tells us that Hillsboro lawmaker Chuck Riley is confounded by an apparent hacker who put a virtual strip club on a website affiliated with Riley.

I am director of Dawn’s Place in Philadelphia, a shelter and therapeutic program for victims of human trafficking. We opened in March 2009 for adult women who have been trafficked and exploited for sex. There are other shelters in California.
You mention “demand” in your article but much more emphasis is needed. We would not need trafficked women for prostitution unless the men in this country had such a great need for prostitutes, pornography and other aspects of the sex trade; we would not have persons trafficked for construction, farms or factories unless there was a demand for low-paid workers without benefits or regulations in the workplace. These low-paid workers produce products that can be sold on the market at low prices for all of us. So, we all share the guilt.

Hillsboro lawmaker’s Web site invaded by virtual strippers
Rep. Chuck Riley says he doesn’t know why a site affiliated with him points to a defunct online ‘strip club’
By Christian Gaston
The Forest Grove News-Times, Mar 8, 2010, Updated 5.1 hours ago (2 Reader comments)
It seemed like a classic political gotcha moment: navigate to a Web site affiliated with a politician and, lo and behold, there’s a site promoting a strip club in the online alternate reality realm known as Second Life.
Except the politician, Hillsboro Democrat Chuck Riley, 70, has no idea what Second Life is. And the Web site, graffic.com, doesn’t belong to him, but instead his son, Brad Riley.
…
Riley says his son thinks someone hacked into Graffic.com and uploaded the Web site contents of The Gallery Isle, a virtual strip club in the online world of Second Life.

NEW YORK, N.Y. –
Authorities say D’Angelo was caught in New York City trying to pay $40 for sex with an undercover cop posing as a prostitute.
Police said Monday that the 36-year-old R&B singer was arrested early Saturday while behind the wheel of his Range Rover.
D’Angelo’s real name is Michael Archer. He says in a statement that he pleaded not guilty and plans to fight the charge.
The statement says the singer hopes the public will “allow the American justice system to resolve the matter before jumping to any conclusions.”
