Seven-state manhunt ends in ABQ

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – U.S. Marshals said a dangerous child rapist is off of the streets after his seven-state run from the law ended in front of Albuquerque grocery store.
Jammie Smith, 33, has been on the run for the past year. Police said he is wanted in Portland, Oregon for raping teenage girls and turning them into prostitutes.
Officials said the girls were between the ages of 13 and 16. As many as five girls were forced into prostitution, according to police Portland.
U.S. Marshals Deputy James Badway said Smith is like a gang of criminals wrapped into one person.
“He’s been convicted of attempted homicide he has also had several narcotics arrests and some firearm arrests,” Badway said. Police and marshals have been tracking Smith through seven states and finally caught him Thursday night in Albuquerque.

PORTLAND — A Portland man wanted on charges that included compelling prostitution and rape was arrested early Thursday evening in New Mexico by U.S. Marshals.
Jammie Toyel Smith, 33, has been charged with compelling prostition, rape, sodomy and sex abuse. He is being held on $1.2 million bail in the Bernalillo County Jail
Smith’s crimes came to light about a year ago after around five girls age 13 to 16 admitted to prostitution.

He was arrested without incident coming out of a Smith’s Drug and Food on in Albuquerque with his mother and a woman wanted for prostitution.

My man Anthony did not exactly nail it, presenting a dress that looks sort of like someone has stitched a satchel to his model’s hip where she hide  a loaf of French bread if she needed to smuggle it out of the store. (But who am I kidding? Models don’t eat bread. I meant watercress.) Michael later describes it as a way for her to “steal champagne bottles at a garden party.” Damn you Michael Kors for writing lines more clever than I. Where were you last year when Lindsay Lohan was passed out in her chair, mumbling about Nicolas’ brilliance?
All the other designers are fairly unremarkable, except for Seth Aaron, who has put together a nice little punk rock plaid dress with a cool back. I could see Nicole Richie in this outfit, if she put on 30 pounds.
 In the end, Emilio earns a well-deserved victory, and Christiane gets sent home, just edging out Jesus’ Sharon Stone stripper outfit. (I was so unmoved by the whole thing, I’m not even going to do my usual gag about scary music and tension mounting. But just know that the music was scary, and the tension was not.)

Portland fugitive arrested in Southwest

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A Portland man accused of compelling girls into prostitution has been arrested in New Mexico.
U.S. Marshals arrested 33-year-old Jammie Smith on Thursday as he walking out of an Albuquerque grocery store with his mother and a woman sought on prostitution charges.
Smith was wanted on warrants linked to rape, sodomy, sex abuse and forcing prostitution.
Portland police started investigating Smith after girls ranging in age from 13 to 16 said he forced them into prostitution.
Smith is being held in the Bernalillo County Jail in New Mexico, where he will await extradition proceedings. Bail is $1.2 million.

Suspect In Prostitution Case Arrested In NM

PORTLAND, Ore. — A man wanted on rape and prostitution charges out of Portland has been arrested in New Mexico, U.S. marshals said Friday.
Marshals took 33-year-old Jammie Smith into custody at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. The arrest was made at a drug store in Albuquerque.
Authorities first became aware of the allegations against Smith about one year ago after several teenage girls admitted they had been prostitutes, marshals said. The case involves as many as five girls.

Authorities staked out the grocery store and waited for Smith to leave and then quickly surrounded him to make the arrest, according to the marshals service. He was with his mother and a woman wanted on a prostitution charge at the time.

 A 33-year-old man accused of compelling several girls in the Portland area into prostitution was arrested last night as he was walking out of a grocery store in Albuquerque.
Jammie Toyel Smith faces numerous warrants accusing him of compelling prostitution, sodomy, rape, and sex abuse.
The charges stem from an investigation Portland police began about a year ago after they encountered several girls, ages 13 to 16, who said Smith forced them into prostitution, police say.
A U.S. Marshal’s fugitive team arrested Smith about 5:30 p.m. outside a store that bears his family name, called Smith’s Drug and Food on Louisiana Boulevard Northeast, said Cory Cunningham, a deputy U.S. Marshal.

At the time of his arrest, Smith was with his mother, and a woman who was wanted for prostitution, according to the U.S. Marshal’s office.

Human trafficking is a shadow industry and an example of slaverys persistence, Archbishop of Portland, Oregon John Vlazny has said. Discussing how Catholics can help combat the crime, he recommended former slave St. Josephine Bakhita as a patroness for its victims.
Writing in his Jan. 14 column in the Catholic Sentinel, Archbishop Vlazny explained that the illegal trade of human beings is the second fastest-growing criminal trade in the world after the drug trade.
Victims are subjected to fraud or coercion and many are forced to work in prostitution. Trafficked people also face labor exploitation in fields such as domestic servitude, restaurant and janitorial work, sweatshop factory work and migrant agricultural work.
