The resurgence of SoHo, though, is complicated: It enjoys an increased profile at city hall and is the subject of an ambitious community improvement plan. Critics, though, raise questions about priorities: Should the re-development of lands be discussed, some ask, before issues around crime and prostitution are totally resolved?
…
The neighbourhood can be tough – one day this week Karas called police twice to shoo away prostitutes – but the community feeling is virtually unmatched, he says.
…
“As our son grew, we thought, we really don’t want him in this environment,” Downer said. “People outside swearing . . . prostitution going on in front of your children, drug deals going on in front of your face.”
…
Though residents admit prostitution and drug use remains a problem, other positive developments – visions for future development, local cultural events and active community leadership – point to a bright future.

… They are trying to put a glass slipper on the step-sister’s foot,” he said of the city’s efforts to revamp areas around his family’s holdings. “That’s not where the action is anymore.”
Without giving anything away, he indicated that the large chunks of land his family owns inside Tualatin’s 325-acre downtown core might be far more suited to medical services, keying off the large hospitals and clinics already ringing the area.
“In the near future, something interesting is going to happen there,” he said, “but it’s not going to be what the city or their consultants have imagined.”
City officials and independent consultants, meanwhile, make the case that a denser, urban-inflected gateway reaching into the city from Interstate 5 stands a much better chance of creating the vibrant core survey respondents say they want in Tualatin.
The city’s auto-dominated eastern gateway currently greets visitors with a topless bar and several big-box retail stores.

Robert Pattinson Felt Like Male Stripper in New Moon
Robert Pattinson felt like he was doing a “striptease” while shooting ‘Twilight Saga: New Moon’.
The British actor, who plays Edward Cullen in the vampire franchise which has taken the world by storm, felt completely overwhelmed when he had to film a scene where he strips off.
He told Parade.com, “I felt pretty goofy stepping out into the sunlight in front of 2,000 people in a town square, ripping my clothes off. I was essentially doing a striptease.
“But here’s the irony, it was also one of the moments where I’ve really felt closest to people’s attachment to Edward. There were so many extras in that scene who were ‘Twilight’ fans who had flown in just to be a part of it. It was quite uplifting and it was also very nerve-wracking.”

Understanding megatrends and the American church
November 18, 2009, 1:22PM
margaretfeinberg.comMargaret Feinberg
The Denver church’s name is unusual: Scum of the Earth. Their demographic? The homeless, prostitutes and anyone else feeling marginalized by society. Their greeters? The smokers out front.
It was but one of the many churches across the United States that author and speaker Margaret Feinberg cited for “developing innovative ways to reach the next generation” during a seminar at George Fox Evangelical Seminary today in Tigard.
Feinberg is author of Scouting the Divine, featuring a shepherdess from Oregon, and other books. Her talk was attended by more than 80 lay leaders and church staff from around the Portland area.
Feinberg’s topic was “Understanding Megatrends; The Church’s Missional Witness in a Millenial Age.”
Leaders of mainline churches, she said, need recognize the dramatic cultural shifts of society and respond in ways that effectively reach and serve their local communities and the next generation; to rethink their approach from “monologue to dialog.”

First Marijuana Cafe Opens in U.S., Tacos and Strippers Combo and Baby Caught With Cocaine
…
Tacos and Strip ClubsAre you hungry for tacos and naked ladies? Then you can satisfy both cravings at the Diamond Club and El Tiempo on Richmond Avenue in Houston, Tex. When you buy a taco, you are admitted free to the nearby strip club. The Diamond Club was formerly called the Pink Pussycat Cabaret which is a more poetic name than its new moniker. The El Tiempo menu is more high end than many Tex Mex restaurants, offering items like the crab enchiladas. Baby Found with CocaineBabies will put anything in their mouths. Most of the things they can find at a daycare should be limited to toys and dirt. However, at the Agape Child Development Center in Minneapolis a 13-month-old boy was found sucking on ball of cocaine. Fortunately, the coke was wrapped in plastic. When a staff member discovered the drug, the child was immediately rushed to the hospital. He hadn’t ingested anything and was okay. No one knows where the cocaine came from. The daycare is now doing random drug tests and installing more security cameras.

Time for honesty, education after pedestrian accidents
November 15, 2009, 6:09PM
Joseph Rose/The OregonianOff message? Nick and Sarah Iannarone hold up a hand-made sign during Tuesday’s silent demonstration for pedestrian safety at Southeast Foster Road and 80th Avenue during the Tuesday night rush hour.
The small crowd gathered under a twilight sky and the buzzing glow of a strip club sign. They pointed fingers and waved signs at rush-hour traffic on Portland’s Southeast Foster Road last Tuesday night.
I expected the impulsive comments and behavior that usually come with demonstrations.
But something about the pedestrian-safety rally at Foster and 80th Avenue really got in my gears.
There was Yvonne Smith in her wheelchair, telling the heart-breaking story of how she lost her legs after being hit by a car in St. Johns two years ago.

ID theft suspect arrested by mistake
The real Kimberly Fossen did NOT commit the crimes
Updated: Friday, 13 Nov 2009, 12:22 PM ESTPublished : Friday, 13 Nov 2009, 12:22 PM EST
(CNN) – “Kimberly Fossen” was arrested for burglary and larceny in connection with a case in New York. However, she was the victim of identity theft.
“This could happen to anybody,” said the real Kimberly Fossen.
Lien Huynh posed as Kimberly Fossen and, according to the real Fossen’s attorney, she has quite the rap sheet.
“She has warrants out for her arrest in Las Vegas for prostitution and in Florida for larceny,” said Samantha Dang, Fossen’s attorney.
She committed all those crimes, according to Dang, after stealing fossen’s identity.
We’ve kind of pieced it all together, and figure she’s a high end escort who moves around,” said Dang.

Wyden seeks bill to reduce sex trafficking
Friday, November 13, 2009 1:12 AM PST
By The Associated Press
PORTLAND — Sen. Ron Wyden is proposing a new bill to boost protection for girls who become sex trafficking victims and tougher prosecution for the men who exploit them.
The Oregon Democrat was joined at a news conference Thursday afternoon in Portland by law enforcement leaders, including Multnomah County Commissioner Diane McKeel and District Attorney Michael Schrunk.
Wyden said sex trafficking amounts to slavery, and the new bill would fund social and legal services to help girls escape from pimps who prostitute them.
It will also provide housing, clothing, counseling and job training to prevent girls from returning to the streets.
The proposed legislation would target federal funds to states with the greatest need, including Oregon. Each pilot project would receive a grant of $2.5 million for victims and to expand sex trafficking investigations.
