A Portland, Ore., man was charged Wednesday with being a cross-country pimp, according to documents filed Wednesday in 3rd District Court.
The 31-year-old man was arrested after an undercover Salt Lake City police detective responded to a classified prostitution ad on the Internet. The detective arranged to meet two women at a hotel room Friday. After he arrived and paid $260 for “sexual acts,” the pair were arrested and cited. They told the officer they were from Oregon, and the man standing outside the door had paid for their flights and hotel room.
He’d also placed the online ad for their services as “dates,” though the women didn’t get any of the money, charging documents state.

Coincidentally, in late 2006, Portland police had re-publicized the homicides, and there on the release was Penland’s alias. On the Internet, Willard “Battling” Nelson is listed as having a boxing record of 23-3-3, with eight knockouts.
“The guy was supposed to hit like a mule,” Phil Stanford says.
The former newspaper columnist (including for The Oregonian) and author of “Portland Confidential: Sex, Crime, and Corruption in the Rose City,” says he’s working another collection, “Rose City Vice,” in which Penland is prominently featured.
“He was a central figure in the crime drama of that time,” Stanford says.
Which makes Penland the kind of on-the-edge-of-society character Snider loves to write about. Snider worked and reworked “Unorganized Crime,” blending fact and fiction for the sake of art and rhyme until it finally appeared on the new record, produced by Don Was.
Whereas Stanford uses the word “thug,” Snider opts for the more lyrical “Willie the wire-wearin/ Stepped-on coke-sellin/ lunch-money pimp of his time.”

… The Jay Leno Show,” NBC’s comedy/talk experiment airing at 9 p.m. weeknights, premiered Monday with the former “Tonight Show” host on familiar ground: adoring studio audience, jokey monologue, sketches, wacky headlines and a musical guest.
But the night’s musical guests – rap and R&B stars Jay-Z, Rihanna and Kanye West – added some buzz for one of the fall TV season’s most anticipated new shows.
West, who had long been scheduled to perform, got face time with Leno to address the flak he’s been getting for taking the stage during Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards and ruining the acceptance speech of country star Taylor Swift.
In a moment reminiscent of when he had Hugh Grant on “The Tonight Show” in 1995 after the actor was arrested with a prostitute, Leno gave West a chance to repeat his online apologies for his behavior.

Ah, it seems like it was only yesterday that the Doug Fir Lounge swung open its doors and changed the landscape of East Burnside forever. No longer just a haven for prostitution and being stabbed as you fumble for your keys while parked outside of the Oregon Artificial Limb Co., the entire block changed as Doug Fir introduced Portland to a wood-paneled future of smoke-free shows, something called a “Fir Burger,” and a place where the drunken stumble from bar to hotel bed (with a complete stranger) was a magical journey of only a few feet. (The shameful walk to your car in the morning, well, that took much longer.)
Anyway, before we get to the anniversary happenings, the mathletes at Doug Fir crunched some numbers:

Another thing, I don’t care what your political leaning is (left, right, up, down or backwards) the CONSTANT one-sided beating on the right is so overdone and boring and lacking in anything even remotely funny that it seems as if 9 yr. old boys are writing the monologue. Seriously. Yes, the last president provided an almost daily supply of mispronunciations and stumbling that was great fodder – and yes the GOP has donated more than enough sex-crazed whore mongering slimeballs into the pot. But the left has just as many. And what about ACORN? How come no jokes about that fiasco, that was surely newsworthy and funny. Supplying money for prostitutes to start a business? With under-aged, illegal aliens? Leno’s crew couldn’t find anything funny to say about that? They had to reach back to the Bush administration?

Yes, he interviewed comedian Jerry Seinfeld on comfortable chairs instead of at a desk. Yes, he did Headlines at the end of the show instead of the second segment. Yes, there was a new theme song. But it all seemed a bit lackluster.
The one saving grace was an appearance by rapper Kanye West. He made headlines Monday because of his actions at the MTV Video Music Awards Sunday night.
West snatched the microphone from teen country star Taylor Swift whod just won an award. He then implied that singer Beyonce Knowles should have won the prize.
The rapper was originally only supposed to perform with Jay-Z and Rihanna on Monday night. Instead, the last minute interview gave Leno the chance to have some interesting moments from an apologetic celebrity; complete with awkward silence.
It brought back memories of Lenos 1995 interview with Hugh Grant. Thats when the host got the British actor to admit hed done a bad thing after getting caught with a prostitute in Hollywood.

… So many celebrities, they never take the time off,” he said. “I’ve never taken the time off to really-you know, just music after music and tour after tour. I’m just ashamed that my hurt caused someone else’s hurt. My dream of what awards shows are supposed to be, ’cause, and I don’t try to justify it because I was just in the wrong. That’s period. But I need to, after this, take some time off and just analyze how I’m going to make it through the rest of this life, how I’m going to improve.”
He had already been set to perform on Leno’s first prime-time show on NBC, but asked for time to talk with the controversy swirling. It may have been a stroke of luck for Leno, whose daily prime-time comedy show already was the most buzzed-about fall debut. With West, it’s likely to draw even more curious viewers.
It was reminiscent of when Hugh Grant appeared on the “Tonight” show with Leno in 1995 to make amends after being arrested with a prostitute-only this time there weren’t many laughs. The Grant appearance was a springboard for Leno to eclipse David Letterman in the ratings.

… The musical guests, frequently an audience turnoff, included Kanye West, 24 hours after he embarrassed himself on the Video Music Awards by declaring Beyonce, not Taylor Swift, should have been honored for best female video.
Jay used the controversy to congratulate himself, saying West’s appearance was an example of how topical the new show is going to be. He thanked West for not ducking out under the circumstances.
West said he is sorry he hurt Swift with his antics Sunday night. “It was wrong…rude, period.” (Hear him for yourself in the video below) But when Leno asked what West’s late mother might have said about his aberrant behavior, there was a long pregnant pause, dead air that seemed to last 10 times as long as it did.
This was not quite Hugh Grant after his prostitution arrest but it was manna from heaven for Leno.

Leno was so relaxed that it almost seemed as if he didn’t care. Perhaps, just as NBC has been doing ever since the network announced that he would be taking over the 10 p.m. hour on weeknights, Leno was trying to lower expectations.
Except for the new set and the bigger guests, the hour could have been any randomly chosen episode of “The Tonight Show.”
One segment had some actual news value. Leno had booked Kanye West, who made headlines Sunday night when he interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the MTV “Video Music Awards” to say that Beyoncé should have won. Observers have been comparing this booking to Leno’s good fortune when Hugh Grant appeared on “The Tonight Show” just after Grant’s arrest for soliciting a prostitute back in the ’90s.

Kanye West gets Leno sucker-punch

“What the hell were you thinking?”
Hey, it worked once.
Jay Leno has to be the luckiest guy on TV. Back in 1995, when he was running neck-and-neck with David Letterman as the controversial host of an as-yet unproven new Tonight Show, the single moment that propelled him ahead in the ratings, where he would remain for the next decade and a half, was the fortuitous booking of a scandalized Hugh Grant, copping to charges of soliciting sex with the sheepish admission, “I did a bad thing.”
And now here’s Leno again, 14 years later, back on the host hot-seat with an untried new 10 o’clock Jay Leno Show … and an apparently now precognative guest-booking acumen, with a contrite Kanye West already scheduled to appear a mere 24 hours after humiliating himself with a disruptive diatribe on Sunday’s MTV Awards.
