Sport and social clubs have become so entrenched, they’re taking over parks and recreation leagues that have suffered for decades from declining funding. The club Sports Monster, which has 11 locations including Chicago city and suburbs, contracts with St. Louis and two suburbs to run their basketball and softball leagues. Underdog is managing leagues for the Washington cities of Everett and Burien, said Shawn Madden, Underdog’s majority owner.
Not everyone embraces the sport-and-social-club trend. Some in Chicago have complained about the for-profit groups monopolizing public park space. Portland, which gives field priority to youth sports, occasionally receives concerned calls about kickball’s rapid expansion and faces the challenge of balancing those competing interests, said Shawn Rogers, customer service manager for Portland Bureau of Parks & Recreation.
But for now the clubs are thriving, and it’s easy to see why. After Catching Something on 82nd won its game Thursday — the name references an avenue notorious for prostitution — it popped a bottle of champagne and danced in its spray. Christine Meyer, a 32-year-old graduate student at OHSU who also plays dodge ball and bowls through sport and social clubs, reveled in her team’s celebration.

Portland, Oregon has been a nexus for tattoo culture for some time. I lived there for four years, from 2002 until 2006, and in that time I got a tattoo of my own and watched many people I knew become canvases for the many tattoo artists in the city. The number of tattoo parlors nearly comes close to the density of strip clubs, which only that city could translate into an accomplishment. They have a lot of bookstores, too. But there has always been a line in the sand between tattoo culture and fine art. Tattoos are works of art; they are conceived and executed by practitioners honing their craft, yet tattoo artists are not grouped with painters or collage artists or even sculptors (another group of artist who work in three dimensions), even though very often it is the case that a tattoo artist will be a fine artist as well. This line may now be dissolving, albeit slowly.

The Decemberists take unpredictable approach to songs and stories

Almost from the beginning, The Decemberists approached pop music as if they’d never heard it before but knew it was what they wanted to do for a living.
Songwriter Colin Meloy has always been fond of sudden left turns, and, after a tentative first EP, The Decemberists arrived in all their unpredictable glory with Castaways and Cutouts, a loose concept album about people trying to live in society’s margins.
There were gypsies, prostitutes and concubines in training. There were guitar chords Meloy had apparently invented. And there were, occasionally, puzzled looks on the faces of Nate Query and Jenny Conlee, the band’s other charter members.
Sometimes he’ll bring in stuff that’s maybe a bit of a surprise or a challenge, but it’s not usually like, Oh God, that’s terrible,’ said Query, the band’s bassist. And even if I’m not initially excited about it I trust his vision and it’s always worked out.

Officers Created Phony Ads On Craigslist

TIGARD, Ore. — Tigard police officers have suspended a prostitution sting after the district attorney said too many of the cases would not hold up in court.
Police made several arrests, but many of them concerned District Attorney Rob Bletko. Bletko on Thursday said he would not describe the investigations as entrapment. But, in many of the cases, Bletko said he did not think the evidence rose to the level of criminal intent and several of the cases have been dropped.
The online sting began in the fall of last year. Officers posed as prostitutes online and created phony ads on Craigslist in the casual encounters section. Some of the ads offered sex in exchange for marijuana.

The Portland Loo was partially a response to Seattle’s expensive crime- and filth-plagued toilets, said Anna DiBenedetto, assistant to city Commissioner Randy Leonard. “We like to think they’re as low-tech as possible,” DiBenedetto said of the Portland Loos. “The reason we came up with them is there are so many high-tech ones out there that break down easier and are too private.”
On Tuesday, the city awarded Lynch Mechanical Construction Co. a contract to build more loos, at nearly $57,000 apiece. The city has budgeted $360,000 for six new toilets.
Portland is banking on a relative lack of privacy as it rolls out the loos. The prototype toilet on Glisan, like the new ones Lynch will build, has louvers at the top and bottom to allow passersby – or police – to peek inside.
That’s by design, DiBenedetto said. Seattle’s toilets turned into refuges for gangs, prostitutes and drug dealers because they were too hard to monitor, DiBenedetto said. Portland hasn’t had the same problems, she said.

Portland police are making arrests for even the smallest of crimes lately, including littering and spitting, in an effort to control homeless populations and respond to complaints made by businesses in downtown Portland. “That’s what we’re going to have to fall back on right now, because we don’t really have any other alternative,” Central Capt. Mark Kruger said.
In Tigard, a series of cases related to trading sex for marijuana have been tossed out because a top prosecutor would not pursue one of the cases. “When the DA’s office tells us, ‘You’re not making that clear enough that this is a prostitute,’ then we’re going to change the way we do business,” said Police Chief William Dickinson, who also announced his retirement on Wednesday.

Tigard ends sex-for-marijuana sting
(AP) TIGARD, Ore. – The Tigard Police Department has ended a sex-for-marijuana Internet sting because officers posting the online ads posed as promiscuous women, not prostitutes.
Police Chief William Dickinson says police arrested about 40 people during the sting that began late last year, but stopped in June because the Washington County district attorney’s office declined to prosecute several cases and told them to change tactics.
The officers posting the Craigslist ads posed as women willing to a have casual sexual encounter with men who had marijuana. No cash was involved. When the men showed up for the encounter, they were charged with prostitution and delivery of drugs.
Defense attorneys say the program was entrapment.
