I am director of Dawn’s Place in Philadelphia, a shelter and therapeutic program for victims of human trafficking. We opened in March 2009 for adult women who have been trafficked and exploited for sex. There are other shelters in California.
You mention “demand” in your article but much more emphasis is needed. We would not need trafficked women for prostitution unless the men in this country had such a great need for prostitutes, pornography and other aspects of the sex trade; we would not have persons trafficked for construction, farms or factories unless there was a demand for low-paid workers without benefits or regulations in the workplace. These low-paid workers produce products that can be sold on the market at low prices for all of us. So, we all share the guilt.

It seemed like a classic political gotcha moment: navigate to a Web site affiliated with a politician and, lo and behold, there’s a site promoting a strip club in the online alternate reality realm known as Second Life.
Except the politician, Hillsboro Democrat Chuck Riley, 70, has no idea what Second Life is. And the Web site, graffic.com, doesn’t belong to him, but instead his son, Brad Riley.

Riley says his son thinks someone hacked into Graffic.com and uploaded the Web site contents of The Gallery Isle, a virtual strip club in the online world of Second Life.

NEW YORK, N.Y. –
Authorities say D’Angelo was caught in New York City trying to pay $40 for sex with an undercover cop posing as a prostitute.
Police said Monday that the 36-year-old R&B singer was arrested early Saturday while behind the wheel of his Range Rover.
D’Angelo’s real name is Michael Archer. He says in a statement that he pleaded not guilty and plans to fight the charge.
The statement says the singer hopes the public will “allow the American justice system to resolve the matter before jumping to any conclusions.”

His talent has a firm following in the area, with fans trekking from Eugene for the show. The performance — his first in Portland since the Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival in 2008 — was sold out in three days.
He pointed out the difference with 2002 when he played to 20 at the Aladdin. “I’ll be damned if those 20 people didn’t get a helluva show.”
Not surprisingly, he preferred Thursday’s turn-out, calling it “one of the greatest audiences of my life.”
Nice. But as much as Portlanders might like the former brothel-turned music venue, selling out the Aladdin does not pluck the same scale as selling out the Royal Albert Hall in London, as he did last year.

Poor place for adult businesses
The Burien City Council has unanimously selected 16th Avenue Southwest between Southwest 112th Street and Southwest 116th Street to be designated for adult businesses.
Cascade Middle School is at the end of Southwest 112th, so that street is used by the walking students going to and from school who live to the west.
Evergreen High School is on Southwest 116th, which is the street used by those living to the west who must walk.
There are no adult type businesses on 16th Southwest at this time. It is noteworthy that a Montessori school is here. The King County Library, White Center branch, is here and McDonald’s is here.
The last two are the only spots in the area that qualify as “kids hangouts.” A restaurant, pizza store and mini-mart anchor the ends of this two-block strip.

A 20-year-old man is accused of compelling a 13-year-old girl into prostitution in Portland

A 13-year-old girl told police that a man she called “Green Eyes” was forcing to her work as a prostitute in Portland, and that he’d get angry if she only made $40 in a day.
Investigators located the suspected pimp at the Unicorn Inn Motel on Southeast 82nd Avenue.
Frederick Adam Criss, 20, is now accused of two counts of compelling prostitution, second-degree rape, first-degree sexual abuse, and two counts of promoting prostituion.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed in court, Criss said he thought the girl was 17. He denied being a pimp, saying he was a drug dealer, the affidavit says.
Criss was arrested Thursday and is being held at the Multnomah County Detention Center on more than $1 million bond. His next court date is March 15.
